Drop In Fertility rate of Indian States 1991 to 2021

Fertility rate of India is 1.98 in 2024. which is lower then the UN recommended level at 2.1 to keep the population stable.

The total fertility rate (TFR) estimates the average number of children a woman would have over her lifetime. fertility at 2.1 children per woman is called ‘replacement level’ below which population will decline over time and above replacement level population will increase.

• Bihar has the highest Fertility rate at 3.0 children per woman.
• Sikkim has the lowest fertility rate of about 1.1 children per woman.
• Uttar Pradesh and Arunachal Pradesh has seen biggest drop in fertility rate of 2.4 and 2.5.

Fertility rate of Uttar Pradesh has dropped from 4.8 in 1991 to 2.4 in 2021 as per National health and family survey.

Fertility rate in India has been fall below the UN’s replacement level of 2.1. Few states like Bihar, UP, Jharkhand and Meghalaya has higher Fertility rates.
