Tiger Population 2025: Global Trends and India’s Conservation Success

Tiger, a majestic animal once on the brink of extinction, has made a remarkable return thanks to India and its conservation efforts. Indian tiger reserves have played a key role in this success. India has doubled its tiger population in a decade.

There are approximately 5,574 tigers in the world as per the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Around 65% of these tigers are found in India, with the total figure at 3,682. India has doubled its tigers from 2,226 (range 1,945–2,491) in 2014 to 3,682 (range 3,167–3,925) in 2022 (source)

The global tiger population was at an all time low in 2010, with only about 3,200 tigers left in the world. By 2025, this number has increased to around 5,574. Remarkably, India alone now has more tigers than the total global tiger numbers recorded in 2010.

Tigers population in India

India holds about 70% of the world’s tiger, making it one of the few countries where tiger numbers continue to rise. This achievement is largely the result of strong tiger conservation policies and strict anti poaching measures introduced by the Government of India.

By 2025, India has 52 tiger reserves, including well-known ones like Jim Corbett, Ranthambhore, and Kanha Tiger Reserve. These reserves play a crucial role in protecting tigers and preserving their natural habitats.

Indian States with most number of Tigers

Indian state Madhya Pradesh has highest numbers of tigers in India with total Tiger count stand at approx. 785 which is higher than total tigers in Russia. Madhya Pradesh followed by Karnataka and Uttarakhand at 563 and 560 tigers respectively as per the NTCA reports released in 2022.
