Old vs New Coastline Length of India: Explained
The earlier officially recorded coastline length of India was 7,516.6 km, based on a survey conducted by the Ministry of Home Affairs in the 1970s. This measurement was derived from the cartographic data available at that time, likely calculated using maps at a scale of 1:4,500,000 or smaller.
The re-verified coastline length of 11,098.81 km was finalized by the Naval Hydrographic Office (NHO) in coordination with the Survey of India. This new measurement is more precise. It uses modern geospatial tools and data at a finer scale of 1:250,000. The increase in length is due to differences in scale, methodology, and technology. The updated data is more accurate and standardized. It supports better national planning, maritime security, and environmental management.
