What Is the World Happiness Index?

The World Happiness Index is the ranking of countries which is given by the World Happiness Report. The rankings are based on six measurable indicators

  • GDP per capita
  • Social support
  • Healthy life expectancy
  • Freedom to make life choices
  • Generosity
  • Perceived corruption

These factors together reflect people’s real experiences and overall life satisfaction, but happiness rankings are not based on any index of these six factors. Rather, scores are based on individuals’ own assessments of their lives, in particular their answers to the single-item Cantril ladder life-evaluation question.

What is Cantril Ladder Life Evaluation question?

Happiness ranking is based on a life evaluation question derived from the Cantril Self-Anchoring Striving Scale (Cantril Ladder). It asks people to rate their life on a 0-10 scale, from the worst possible life (0) to the best possible life (10).

Please imagine a ladder with steps numbered from 0 at the bottom to 10 at the top. The top of the ladder represents the best possible life for you and the bottom of the ladder represents the worst possible life for you. On which step of the ladder would you say you personally feel you stand at this time?
